
Pablo Montes
Born and raised in Venezuela, Pablo Montes began his musical studies in the world-renowned El Sistema program. Andres Riera was his bassoon teacher in his hometown, Acarigua. El Sistema provided him with the opportunity to meet celebrated conductors like Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle. During his time in El Sistema, he took lessons from Berliner Philharmonik bassoonist Hening Trog and later participated in different master classes with world-class bassoon players like Klaus Thunemann, Sergio Azzolini, Gustavo Nuñez, and Laurent Lefèvre.
In 2010, Pablo moved to Lacombe, Alberta to attend Canadian University College, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in music performance. With a full assistant-ship scholarship, he began his master’s-level studies at the University of Alberta, and graduated in 2016. Pablo pursued further early music education at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland between 2021 and 2023, under the tutelage of Carles Cristobal and Donna Agrell.
In the past years, Pablo has performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, and has completed training with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in Toronto and American Bach Soloists in San Francisco. Pablo currently works as a freelance modern bassoonist in the Edmonton area, serves as the principal bassoonist of the Juno-winning orchestra Rosa Barocca in Calgary, and in Graz, Austria, as principal bassoonist of 4D Barock.. Additionally, he performs with a range of early music ensembles in Switzerland, Germany, and throughout North America.
