
Atao Liu
Dr. Atao Liu is a New York–based bassoonist and teaching artist whose work spans orchestral,
chamber, and operatic repertoire. She has performed with ensembles including the American
Ballet Theatre Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, American Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse
Orchestra, and Bach Festival Orchestra of Bethlehem, and has appeared in productions with
Berkshire Opera Festival, Heartbeat Opera, New Rochelle Opera, and The Little Opera Theatre
of New York.
An active chamber musician, she is an artist-in-residence at the Caroga Lake Music Festival and
the MostArts Festival, and performs with ensembles including North/South Consonance
Ensemble, Parlando, and Orchestra Q, as well as the Manhattan Fagotistas Bassoon Ensemble.
Recent highlights include a recording on Robert Martin: Wind Quintets, Volume II with the
North/South Consonance Ensemble. Dr. Liu is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music
Precollege Division and Bloomingdale School of Music.
Dr. Liu holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (BM), The Juilliard School (MM), and
Stony Brook University (DMA), where she studied with Jun Zhu, Carolyn Beck, Kim
Laskowski, and Frank Morelli.
